Change? Can Things Change?

The America that was once the beacon of hope, the land of the free, the envy of the world, has obviously lost its wheels and lost its way. My country was headed full speed toward the cliff and a sure fall to destruction and oblivion. Right now, it feels as if we are already off the cliff and running wildly in mid-air, much like Wile E. Coyote, right before the plunge.

But wait. Is it possible that Mr. Coyote has managed to turn around and return to solid ground? A couple of days ago, the woman who for two weeks was a deer-in-headlights roadblock to the future, capitulated to let the process move forward. She complained that she and her department are not equipped to make such an historic decision, especially without any direction from her boss. Half an hour later, her boss Tweeted that he told her to make the decision. The truth, as always with that group, is elusive. But nobody cares.

Then, our next President began to introduce a bunch of middle-aged and older people, who are nothing but boring, very capable, knowledgeable, people who seem dedicated to attempting to putting the tires back on the vehicle of government, fixing the worn-out, overused shock absorbers, and getting the US and the world back on a smoother road to the future.

More importantly, the tone is different. Every one of Biden’s new appointees said they are humbled by their being selected to serve their country. When is the last time you heard that? It was also striking that no one, including Biden, lashed out against anyone. No one demeaned anyone. These people may have made promises they can’t keep, but they didn’t lie, they didn’t make up craziness on the spot, and they didn’t take credit for things that never happened.

Talk about a bunch of smart-ass elitists, these people know what they are talking about, and they take their job seriously. They seem to want to bring peace and prosperity to all Americans, and to do it by cooperating with the rest of the world. No, they are not radicals. They are not about to turn America upside down. That may, or may not come later.

Will we all be joining hands and singing Kumbaya by the end of January? Not hardly, as my grandson says. But there will be things like consistent policies that can be understood and followed. They stated that they want to work together with our usual allies while opposing those who would do us harm The discussion will be based in reality. Decisions will be made based on the best information available. Why does all of this seem so unusual? Smart people saying reasonable things.

I am not naive. I know that McConnell, Cruz and Tucker Carlson, will still be doing their best to hold on to their money, power and audience. They will accuse these people of being radical (ha!) and of reestablishing the deep state (exactly). There are still 75 million people who voted for Trump. The Dems did not, and probably won’t flip the Senate. Racism and greed have not vanished from American soil.

But Trump, the constant victim, the constant warrior, always with the big con, now seems lost and bewildered. His plan to throw the election to HIS Supreme Court fell apart in days. He now hides in the White House, and appears to be what he is, a pathetic loser.

I don’t know what will happen to his following. But I have a sense, and it might be because I live in a very secure bubble, that 3/4 of Americans are going to feel better, happier and more relaxed, when they wake up every day and there is not a new, over-the-top, unexplainable crisis confronting them.

Sadly, he problem with that is that there is a HUGE crisis, and it is the virus at Thanksgiving and Christmas. But, even that will begin to have a consistent, science-supported directives that will come from everyone agreeing on the same methods. The new group will also be able to distribute the vaccine to the people who need it, and not just to the people who contributed to their campaign.

The question remains, did Trump do enough to crack the foundations of democracy so that it may never be repaired? Is there still the possibility that he, or someone smarter and more cunning, will step up and move us toward the Chinese system of government? Or, will he be seen as the the person who showed us that we were speeding in the wrong direction? He exposed the depth of all of our flaws. He made us all realize the importance of critical thinking. Perhaps he will have made us all realize that we have to pay attention if we want to be really free. This election proved that we can.
