Where to Begin

When working on stories with your children, you don’t have to begin with a formal story or even a detailed made up story.

You can begin with The Day Long Story. This is a story you and your child/children make up during the day.

“Once upon a time…” or “There once was a…”

Encourage your child to think of different things. If you have more than one child, you can have them take turns, or if you have a great memory, they can all give a response. You can also have them all give a response and then vote to pick the best one. As the children get used to this style of storytelling, ask them to include more adjectives~There was a big, scary dragon.

Who lived in a tree trunk at the edge of the woods.

You can write the story down as you go through the day, but it is more fun and works your memory to try and remember the sequence. Each time you add onto it, repeat the parts you added before.

This could go on until bedtime, days or just a little while.

When you or your child feel like you need to end the story, say The End of They Lived Happily Ever After.

If you really liked the story, you can write it down or put it into the computer with your child. Allow him/her to illustrate it and staple the pages into a book with construction paper covers. If you have several children, have each illustrate a different part of the story.

This can just be a little thing during the day or you can make it more detailed. The purpose is to begin telling stories with your children and getting them to think of pieces of a story.
