10 of the Untraditional Ways I Motivate Myself

I get it.

You have so much work to do, projects to finish, and tasks to complete but you just can’t bring yourself to do them. There isn’t anything wrong with that and there isn’t anything wrong with you. Because if that were true, then there would be something wrong with me and I refuse to believe that.

There’s nothing wrong with us. We just aren’t motivated. It can be hard to get motivated, especially if you face mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, even ADHD.

I’m lucky enough to have all 3.

After doing much research on the different “traditional” ways of motivating oneself, I’ve come to realize that most of the methods are the same and most of these methods don’t work for people like me.

This is exactly why I’m writing this article; after gathering some information from others and testing out different methods to see what works the best, I’ve come up with my own list of ways to get motivated.

With that being said, let’s dive in!

1) Quit

Yes, you read that correctly.

I’m not telling you to give up your dreams if they really are your dreams. If you are having trouble finding the motivation and you don’t want to complete your goals, then maybe these goals aren’t a part of your dream or your dream isn’t actually your dream.

This of course means you’d have to do some self-reflecting and evaluating to figure out what your dreams are.

But there’s nothing wrong with quitting and starting from the beginning if that’s something you feel you need to do.

2) “Just Get Started”

There’s a reason I put that in quotes.

I personally hate this advice. I mean if it was that easy, I wouldn’t be writing this article and you wouldn’t be needing/wanting to read this article. I had to look at this advice in a different way. I asked myself, “Self, why does this particular job or project or task matter to you? Why’s it important?”

By asking yourself the question of “why”, you are activating your brain and allowing it to think about the task at hand and your reasoning as to why it’s important to you specifically. If there’s no actual importance, then there’s no reason to do it. If you’re scatterbrained like I am, then you might have multiple tasks at hand. Eliminate the unimportant tasks and leave room in your mind for new and important ideas.

This step isn’t meant to motivate you, but it helps if you have a clear understanding of what you need and want to be motivated about. What drives you to want to continue working on whatever you are working on?

Find your “why”, eliminate the unimportant tasks, declutter your thoughts and let’s move on to the next step.

3) 5 Minutes at a Time

You have 5 minutes and I have 5 minutes. All you need is 5 minutes. Work for only 5 minutes, see how you feel. Then, work for another 5 minutes.

When I work for only 5 minutes at a time, it doesn’t feel as overwhelming to me. 5 minutes is not a long time, but you can still get a little bit of progress done. If you can make it 5 minutes, you can make it another 5 minutes, and so on.

4) I never forget to reward myself

Small achievements are still achievements. I always promise myself rewards if I can get certain tasks done.

It doesn’t have to be a huge reward. The bigger the achievement, the bigger the reward. It can be as small as a pat on the back, having a snack, making your favorite meal, taking a small break, or even celebrating with friends/family.

5) I’m not perfect

Neither are you.

“Perfect is the enemy of good.” If you focus too hard on being perfect and doing your tasks flawlessly, then you might not even begin at all.

Don’t be afraid to work messily. I had once heard somewhere, “The key to doing a good job is to do a bad job and then make it better.”

6) Looking forward to that good feeling

That’s a reward in itself. That sweet feeling you get after you finally complete everything you had set out to do.

7) Set realistic goals

Setting realistic goals is a sure way of not disappointing myself. Once I get through the first few steps listed above, it might take my unmotivated butt a little while to complete these goals. However, at least I know the goals that I’m setting out to complete are doable.

I used to have a habit of setting goals that were so big they were nearly impossible to complete. Honestly, I think I did that because I knew they were nearly impossible to complete. It made me not want to bother trying.

My tactic is to take the bigger goals and break them down into smaller, more manageable goals. That way they are easier to complete, and you are still working towards the bigger picture.

This is where we go back to that 5 minutes at a time step; Once you break down your big goal and make it into smaller goals, begin working on each goal. One at a time. 5 minutes at a time. Check in with yourself every 5 minutes to see how you feel, and then continue.

Reward yourself after each completed goal. Those are your achievements regardless of how small they are! Be proud of that.

8) Let’s not get discouraged

That speaks for itself.

Don’t get discouraged, especially if you can’t finish a task or complete a specific goal. It’s okay if you feel overwhelmed, but don’t ever tell yourself you can’t do something. Because that’s just a lie, and that very lie is what’s going to keep you from trying again.

Be kind and compassionate towards yourself and reward yourself for trying!

9) Living my best life

I will admit. I’m not living my best life right now, but that’s not going to stop me from trying and pretending that I am. Manifestation is real and acting as though you are living the life you want, will attract the life you want. That’s exactly what I’m doing and I encourage you to do the same.

I can tell you to sit down at your computer or with books and research/study to find inspiration.

But that’s bull crap.

You won’t find inspiration in books or computers; you’ll find inspiration by going outside and living your best life. Inspiration is found everywhere including nature, hanging out with friends and family, going to events, enjoying the little or big things that make you happy.

10) Failure is my best friend!

If you’re having trouble getting and/or staying motivated because you are afraid of failing, just remember that failure is your best friend.

If you don’t fail, you won’t learn, and you won’t grow. Instead of trying to avoid failure, welcome it with open arms.

Final Thought

These are my 10 untraditional ways of how I motivate myself. I get how hard it is to motivate yourself, especially if depression and/or anxiety are in the mix. That’s why it’s important to go easy on yourself and not expect too much all at once.

Go slow. Dip a toe.
