Child sex dolls for pedophiles

Child sex dolls have hit the press a couple of times in 2017. I learned about it for the first time when a friend of mine was outrageously complaining about it on Facebook.

As a thought experiment: Let’s call pedophilia a sexual orientation for now (which is not absurd, many scientists treat it as such). My outraged friend was basically saying, everybody should get sex toys to play with, just not this one sexually oriented minority. Sounds discriminating, doesn’t it? Even worse: it discriminates exactly the group, where such sex toys could have the most influential effect on sexual abuse.

So, what really is the problem with pedophilia? If we again consider it a sexual orientation, the problem with it is, that the desired sexual object is a human that is not yet ready to make informed decisions with strong long-term impact. As soon as a child is involved in some form of pleasing a pedophile — directly or indirectly through exploitation for (motion) picture — this has traumatic consequences. How can we better protect children from pedophiles?

If child sex dolls could be manufactured without involving children and would significantly reduce the desire for intercourse with children for pedophiles, it could become a great benefit.

>90% of the comments that I see on the internet always suggest a radical measure to prevent pedophiles from harming children. Why I generally agree on some level, I believe that this treatment of the topic, as well as the suggested measure, would force pedophiles to further isolate their condition from every, even trusted, person. Presumably, such measures would increase the numbers of unrecognized pedophiles, sexual offenses, and suicide rates of pedophiles, making the problem even more complex to deal with.

Sympathizing with the idea to be absolutely strict with treating child offenders, I guess the question comes down to: do we want to give pedophile non-offenders the chance to have a decent life, or do we want to demonize all of them? Because alcoholics also pose a risk to other humans, even though the average harm is less, we do not demonize all of them. A decriminalization of pedophilia would certainly help not to societally punish pedophile non-offenders. Most of them have the strong desire to never offend a child and obviously wish to not be punished for crimes that other people in the same group have committed.

By decriminalizing pedophilia, I do not mean decriminalizing sexual offenses.

Having said that, it is still a heavily discussed topic among scientists, whether sexual pleasure through a medium produced without children involved can help pedophiles not to act upon their sexual desires. It could also have the contrary effect. Same holds true for the decriminalization and de-tabooization of the topic.

Are there currently researchers working on the implications and effectivity of providing pedophiles with child sex dolls, maybe even robots? I would be interested if somebody could point me to an expert I could interview, to provide a more constructive basis for this discussion.

Note that the child sex dolls circulating in the UK are imported. This means, that it is not enough to research their effect and maybe legalizing them, but it needs to be tackled internationally along the supply chain to successfully protect children.
