There are thousands of websites using wordpress and there is a reason for it. The ecosystem around wordpress is so huge. Just check out those millions of themes or the endless number of plugins (extensions).

So everything is great?

Well, the critics getting louder and louder around the user base. There are growing concerns about the used programming language (PHP). Many still love PHP but others see the language fading in importance and have difficulties finding programmers to maintain custom extensions for example.

A lot of people had hoped that with the major release of wordpress 5.x it will be re-written using a different stack like node.js — well it wasn’t.

Security concerns

The used programming language (PHP) isn’t a real threat. It is well maintained and updated regularly. But, because of the enormous community, you can’t control all of the plugins, themes, and extensions (e.g. custom page templates). Some developers take security seriously and are well-experienced — others just start their carrier and do not take into account the many people who just wait for a plugin that opens a door for them.

Performance concerns

As many are crying about the security issues at least the same amount of people do constantly monitor their site performance. Not only because they love to give the users the best possible experience, but also they realize that today's mobile users do not accept sites loading longer than some seconds. Even google is taking site-performance into account for their ranking. A page that does not load fast enough will be ranked way lower than a performing counter site.
