“Name something you’re afraid to try but really want to. What makes you afraid to try it?”

I am deathly afraid of the ocean. I hate the ocean. Everything about the ocean scares me to a point of mental breakdown. The fear of the unknown and the fear of not knowing what is swimming below or beside me, shakes me to my core.

Sharks add the cherry on top to the already terrifying ocean. Sharks grow an average of 15 feet long. 15 feet long. They have 6 senses and can swim near 35 mph. Oh, and there are over 400 species of sharks in the ocean today.

So something that I am afraid to try but really want to, would have to be cage diving.

Now cage diving, to me, seems like the only way you could ever possibly enjoy the beauty of a 15 foot monster swimming 5 feet away from you. And even though I think it is crazy that people cage dive, I think it could help me get over my fear.

Now, some believe that sharks are amazing beautiful creatures. I have no problem with that. They are one of God’s creations and I do believe that they are amazing animals but, my reasoning for disliking them to the point of shock is, in fact, rational.

These 3 movies all feature sharks in horrifying ways. Attacking, hunting, biting, killing. These 3 movies are what shaped my adolescent mind into a shark-hating, ocean-loathing tween.

Today, still haunted by the memories, I hope that someday I will muster up the courage to cage dive. And I pray that it might free me of my overwhelming fear.
