What Do Cataracts Do To Your Vision?

Cataracts cause a clouding of the eye’s lens. You may develop a cataract in one eye at first, and then the other eye. Cataracts are most often age-related, and, along with other age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration, are one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States.

You should arrange an eye appointment when you notice any vision changes. Cataracts or otherwise, common eye diseases and vision disorders are usually treated most effectively in beginning stages.

If you are 40 or older, you should schedule an eye exam regardless of any vision problems. This exam will give the doctor a baseline so that they can better assess what changes mean as they occur. They will also look for early indicators of any issues and assess your family history to determine your risk. The eye doctor will let you know how often to schedule an eye exam based on these findings (usually every 1–2 years).

Get a baseline eye exam at age 40. Your doctor will recommend the frequency of future eye exams, usually every 1–2 years.

Blurry or cloudy vision is often one of the first signs of cataracts. If you wear glasses, you may think your lenses are smudged or greasy but find the blurriness does not go away after cleaning your glasses.

In the past, increased blur may have indicated that you needed an updated vision prescription. Cloudiness caused by cataracts will persist despite your prescription.

Cataracts may cause your field of view to look tinted in brown or yellow. Your vision may seem hazy to you. The fading of colors may make it difficult to see contrast and detail.

You may see things in double when you have early stage cataracts. Even if you look through one eye only, and cover the other eye, the double vision persists. Sometimes this symptom goes away as the cataract grows larger.

Night vision problems are often one of the first vision changes to be noticed. Headlights may cause more glare than they did previously, and you may see halos around traffic lights, headlights and street lamps. You may overall have more difficulty seeing at night.

Cataracts tend to increase glare seen at night.

The effects of cataracts discussed above can seriously affect your daily life. Consider all of the aspects of your life that could be hindered, including:

Untreated, cataracts will continue to grow, eventually robbing you of your vision. Fortunately, there is a safe, effective procedure to remove the cataract and restore clear vision.

To reverse the problem, the clouded eye lens must be removed and replaced with an artificial, implantable lens. This is called an intraocular lens. Unlike a contact lens, this replacement stays in your eye permanently, allowing you to see clearly and conveniently.

Cataract surgery removes the clouded lens and replaces it with an intraocular lens.

They say that if you lived long enough, you’d eventually develop a cataract at some point. That’s another way of saying that cataracts are not easy to prevent and are a common side effect of aging, just like wrinkles and gray hair. But there are some things the medical community agrees may delay the onset of cataracts:

Ask your eye doctor for custom tips. You deserve healthy eyes and clear vision. Getting an eye exam now is a good way to establish your current visual health.
