How jealousy is destroying your financial freedom

I was thinking this morning about an old neighbour who had this obsession with trying to outdo all her neighbours. Each time we got something for our family, suddenly the next day her family had a newer and better version of what we just bought.

For example, I bought some parrots and they were beautiful birds, I built a cage for them and my family loved them. The next day her children came to my house to play with my kids, and they were telling me about the new birds their mother just got them.

It was a nice thought she bought her children some new pets, but it was always amusing that it was a day after I got ours. Sadly a few days later I found my bird cage door wide open and my parrots gone.

What is the cost of trying to keep up with other people, well there are a few high prices you need to pay. There is the stress of always being the “top dog” showing the world how perfect your life is.

In the Instagram, Tik-Tok and social media world, it is a huge flaw to show off your “wealth” for a few likes. Even in the pre-social media world (yes I am old enough to know such a world) there was always someone chasing clout.

But what does it cost you? From borrowing money to maxing out your credit just for a brief dopamine hit. Is it really worth it? The short answer is “no”.

Living a fake life with the hopes of becoming famous is a fool’s errand and is the action of a poor person. Not just poor financially, but poor mentally and spiritually.

Most people who are “rich” and are not influencers know the secrets to become rich.

It is not wasting your money on big houses, fast cars, fancy holidays in 5-star hotels or the latest fashions. The rich know how to invest their money and do not try to keep up with the Joneses, there really isn’t any need.

People who are financially educated never go out and buy brand new cars, because they know that as soon as it is driven off the showroom floor it loses 20% of its value…
