Reflection 5

In this first article, the author presents a very sobering the reflective commentary on the recent Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. The author is coming from a Jewish background and has some first-hand knowledge about the significance of the name of the synagogue, Jewish daily life, and the current state of anti-Semitism. The article then addresses the President and his response to the event. The article states that is hesitant to make criticisms that other articles make, but still offers a strong critique. The overall tone is very serious and somber and still offers a touching call for hope.

The other type of article is frequently see following mass shootings is the one here. Whenever there is a tragedy, everyone has a crazy desire to learn as much as possible about the perpetrator. There is a great problem to this, as it a large public platform to their views. Is anyone really surprised that this shooter is anti-Semitic and racist? I don’t think there is really anything productive coming from these articles. It would be one thing if the article addressed the origins of the crime in a critical way and offered possible ways of prevention, but this does not happen. It more like celebrity gossip for the perpetrator of a hate crime.
