If I have wounded any soul today

I fear I need to apologize for unclear writing, leading to unnecessary confusion. Yesterday, I said Socrates defined an art’s interest as, “its own self-perfection.” Though I retain that conviction (in substance), I fear I used poor wording.

The potential confusion may be illustrated by looking at yesterday’s quotation in a larger context. I have inserted brackets to clarify who is speaking, and bolded relevant passages:

Socrates explicitly says, “Medicine does not consider the interest of medicine..” Isn’t that a direct contradiction of what I wrote?

Perhaps…but I don’t really think so. In my mind, I was an art’s self-perfection as the flawless attainment of its end.

It seems to me that the only real difference is that — since he is addressing the specific art of medicine — Socrates goes the extra step of specifying that the flawless attainment of the end of medicine is the flawless servicing of the interests of the body.

If I have caused you greater confusion, I beg your forgiveness.

If I have misrepresented Plato, I ask for that same forgiveness…and that you would enlighten me.

And if I have succumbed to the vice of prolixity…I ask you to come back tomorrow and read anyway.
