Warren Johnston Teaches NEK How to Dance

Not everyone starts out as a great dancer, and neither did Warren Johnston. But over time the 76 year-old has gained some experience.

Johnston says, “I never danced when I was younger except to go to the prom or something like that, and I was very clumsy at it.” Johnston didn’t even have much of an interest in dance until his wife convinced him to take line dancing classes with her.

And after decades of practice and a love for what he learnt, he decided to share his passion with others. While spending time in Arizona for the winters, Johnston came across the idea that he could teach his own classes. “I had been dancing for at least 40 years up until then, and so I started teaching. It’s the beginning of the story and there’s no end in sight” Johnston says.

He says because renting out halls to teach the classes can be exspensive, he wanted to find a more cost effective way to rent the halls. And so he found it, through the Council on Aging, he was able to provide free classes during his time in Lyndonville before the winter weather hits and he heads back to Arizona.

Johnston’s favorite part of dancing is the benefits that come with it, “It’s keeping me young, and if you knew how much dancing I do you wouldn’t believe it.” He also adds that there are benefits to dancing at his age because of its help with preventing Alzheimer’s and Dementia diseases.”

Even if people are nervous to try dancing, they should still give it a try, “If you can walk, you can dance and that’s all that dancing is. Walking to the beat of the music. And I’ve been fortunate that I can feel the beat of the music.” And that’s a beat he doesn’t plan to loose anytime soon.

Johnston teaches classes at the Lyndonville municipal building on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 10:30.
