How to Write the Perfect Diary Entry

I’ve kept a lot of journals, with my first entry written when I was ten years old. Yet I’ve never really been consistent, not until recently.

Almost two months ago, I listed out what would be ideal for me to include in a daily diary entry to make journaling more useful to me and motivate me to keep at it. Since getting this “perfect diary entry” down, I’ve hardly missed a single day!

It’s what’s worked for me, though I can’t guarantee it’ll be what works for you. But, if you’ve struggled to stick with a journaling habit and are determined to finally keep a diary, maybe this can help get you started.

The key, I find, to keeping up with writing (or with any other task that you want to make a habit) every day is to not set the expectations too high. I don’t have to list every single thing I did that day. I don’t have to write about anything I did that day if I didn’t really do much at all. I don’t have to share long stories, every single idea in my head, or the entirety of my decision-making process.

If I have news to share that day, great! I can write it down. If I have something to work out that writing may help with, I can explore it.

Once the page is open at the end of the day, the invitation is there to write. Since there’s no pressure to spend lots of time writing, opening the page is less daunting. In the end, by expecting less of myself, I end up writing more.

I don’t do this step every night, but I do it much more often than before I took the imperative of long-form writing away from my journaling.
